Bio

Alexander Beliavsky is a Slovenian grandmaster who played most of his career for the Soviet Union. He also and briefly played for Ukraine after Soviet dissolution before moving to his adopted country in 1994. Beliavsky was a two-time world championship candidate and four-time Soviet champion (1974, 1980, 1987, and 1990). He was also Slovenian champion in 1996 and 2011.

Beliavsky has remained active in competition for a long time, playing as recently as the January 2020 Gibraltar Masters. His longevity is one reason he has beaten nine world champions, ranging chronologically from GM Vasily Smyslov to GM Magnus Carlsen.
