Lasker vs Steinitz 1894

In 1894, Emanuel Lasker took the World Championship title from Wilhelm Steinitz. They played first to ten wins and Lasker won 10-5 with four draws. Check out the tactical highlights in Lasker's victory!

Lasker vs Steinitz 1896

In 1896 Lasker again defeated Steinitz, this time by a dominant score of 10-2 with five draws. Perhaps the best game of the match was one of Steinitz's wins in the 11th game.

After a long break, Steinitz defended his title again, against Frank Marshall. Marshall was a brilliant player, but not as well rounded as Lasker. Lasker defended the title with an undefeated 11.5-3.5 score.

Seigbert Tarrasch was one of the best players in the world in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He challenged Lasker in 1908, but Lasker again won decisively, 10.5-5.5.

In 1910, Lasker played a ten-game match against Carl Schlechter. Going into the final game, Schlechter led 1-0 with eight draws. Lasker had to win a wild game on-demand to tie the match and retain his title!
